WHAT HAPPENED
Amazon did not give Tracy, California a start date for Prime Air drone deliveries when a newspaper asked for one. The Stockton Record asked the company when flights from its East Grant Line Road fulfillment center would begin, and the answer the paper published on September 24 covered pricing, package limits, a 70% growth figure and the company’s excitement at coming back to California. Amazon told the Los Angeles Times and ABC10 in late August that Tracy would be flying within a month. The statement listed the metro areas where Prime Air already flies as Phoenix, Detroit, San Antonio, Dallas, Tampa, Waco, Kansas City, Baton Rouge, Omaha and Houston, the same ten on Amazon’s August 19 expansion page , with more metro areas promised before the end of the year. It added one figure that page does not carry: a 70% year-over-year increase in items delivered in under a day, which Amazon offered as the reason it wants Tracy.
