PayPal is not signing universities one at a time; it is embedding into the processors that already sit between schools and their payers. Nelnet Campus Commerce serves more than 1,100 higher education institutions, Illumia powers payments and campus systems at more than 10,000 institutions across higher education, healthcare, and senior living, and TouchNet describes itself as the market leader in higher education commerce technology. Each school that switches the option on routes a high-ticket, low-frequency payment through PayPal’s branded checkout rather than a raw card form or an ACH transfer.
