Payments technology company Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an artificial intelligence platform that allows businesses and developers to access, compare and route requests between different AI models. The deal marks one of Stripe’s biggest bets yet on artificial intelligence and signals the company’s ambition to become a major part of the infrastructure powering the AI economy. While Stripe and OpenRouter have not disclosed the financial terms, the deal has been reported to be worth slightly more than $8 billion, making it a major transaction in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market. The acquisition comes as businesses increasingly rely on multiple AI models rather than building their applications around a single provider. OpenRouter has positioned itself as a neutral marketplace and gateway, allowing developers to access hundreds of models through one platform and choose the model best suited to a particular task.
